SAN FRANCISCO—Around 60 residents of a Financial District hotel who were temporarily displaced by a Tuesday, April 11 night fire were cleared to return to their rooms on Wednesday, April 12 officials indicated.

The basement at the three-story Balmoral Hotel on the 600 block of Clay Street caught fire at 8:40 p.m. The cause of the blaze is under investigation.

Several residents had to exit the building in their pajamas and blankets as firefighters doused the blaze in under an hour. After the fire was contained, the building then had to be aired out completely. Red Cross responders also arrived on scene to offer food, supplies, and counseling. The fire is believed to have originated in the storage room of the basement.

“All tenants let back in to homes at 2 am Thank you @AaronPeskin for coming to the shelter after midnight to help No injuries,” the San Francisco Fire Department tweeted.

Occupants were offered overnight shelter at the Betty Ong Rec Center located on Mason Street. There were no reports of any injuries from the fire.
