SAN DIEGO—Actor Miles Teller from the films “The Spectacular Now” and “Whiplash” was arrested and charged with public intoxication on Sunday, June 18, in San Diego.
Teller, 30, was approached by an officer shortly after midnight on Sunday in the 4300 block of Mission Boulevard, off Grand Avenue in Pacific Beach, according to San Diego Police Department (SDPD) Officer Billy Hernandez. Teller, who was with a group of men, reportedly showed signs of intoxication, including slurred speech, bloodshot eyes, and trouble keeping his balance.
During the evaluation, the actor allegedly lost his balance and nearly fell into the street. He was taken into custody after the officer determined he was “unable to care for his own safety,” according to reports.
Teller was transported to a detox center, where he was provided the option to sleep for four hours and sober up. He remained uncooperative with the detox center’s staff and was rejected from their care. He was then arrested for public drunkenness, a misdemeanor offense, and transported to a local jail. According to officials, he was released without bail after approximately four hours.
In December 2016, Teller and his longtime girlfriend, model Keleigh Sperry, were involved in a car accident, when an Uber driver made a left turn in front of Teller’s Ford Bronco and caused it to flip over. Teller and Sperry were not seriously injured in the incident. Law enforcement officials confirmed the accident was not Teller’s fault.
An alumnus of New York University’s Tisch School of the Arts, Teller made his feature film debut in “Rabbit Hole” in 2010, alongside Nicole Kidman and Aaron Eckhart. He appeared in films such as “Footloose” (2011) and “21 & Over” (2013) before receiving critical acclaim for his performance in “The Spectacular Now” (2013), for which he won the Dramatic Special Jury Award for Acting at the Sundance Film Festival. In 2014, he starred in the drama “Whiplash,” which earned him nominations for multiple awards.
The actor also had roles in the Marvel comics superhero film “Fantastic Four” and the “Divergent” film series, based on the dystopian novels by author Veronica Roth. He starred in the drama “Bleed for This” in 2016 and will appear in “Granite Mountain” and “Thank You for Your Service,” both set to be released in October 2017.
