HOLLYWOOD—Actress Doris Roberts, best known for her role as the overbearing mother, Marie Barone, on the classic sitcom “Everybody Loves Raymond” passed on Sunday at the age of 90, according to reports. No details of her death have been released to the public. She was remembered by co-stars, including Brad Garret from “Everybody Loves Raymond” and the creator of the show, Philip Rosenthal, on social media.
“Truly the end of an era. My wonderful TV mother-in-law and ELR nemesis Doris Roberts was a consummate professional from whom I learned so much. She was funny and tough and loved life, living it to the fullest. Nothing gave her greater joy than her three wonderful grandchildren, of whom she was so proud. It truly was a privilege Doris. I love you and miss you,” said Patricia Heaton, former TV daughter-in-law on “Everybody Loves Raymond,” on her Twitter page.
Roberts was born on November 4, 1925 in St. Louis, Mississippi, according to the International Movie Database. She was raised in New York where she became a veteran Broadway actress before getting parts in movies and television shows in the 70s. Her reputation helped her land the part as Marie Barone in “Everybody Loves Raymond,” and parts in movies like “Christmas Vacation” and “Grandma’s Boy.”
She was nominated for a total of seven Emmy awards during her career and won a total of 4 for her work on “Everybody Loves Raymond.” Roberts is survived by her son Michael Cannata and three grandchildren.
