HOLLYWOOD—Last week it was the sequel “The Lego Movie 2: The Second Part” that won the box-office, this week that flick has been dethroned. The sci-fi adventure “Alita: Battle Angel’ rose to the top spot with a $33 million haul during the President’s Day holiday weekend. While many would consider the debut solid, considering what it cost to make “Alita” will leave you gasping because its budget was a little over $200 million. Does not look like the film which has been heralded as a visual advancement in cinema will recoup that cost.

Dropping to second place was “The Lego Movie 2” with around $25 million. The sequel is not doing the big business its predecessor accomplished back in 2014. After about 2 weeks in theaters, the film has only amounted over $60 million at the domestic box-office. Landing in third place was the comedy “Isn’t It Romantic” with a respectable $17.3 million, and a $23 million domestic gross since its release on February 13. Another comedy cracking the top five was “What Men Want” falling to fourth place with $12.6 million.

Rounding out the top five was the horror sequel, “Happy Death Day 2U” with $11.5 million for the holiday weekend, but a total of $15 million since its release on February 13. Hmm, looks like audiences are suffering a bit of fatigue considering its predecessor took in over $26 million during opening weekend in 2017. Very slow weekend to say the least at the box-office. This weekend sees the release of the animated flick “How to Train Your Dragon: The Hidden World” arrives in theaters.
