HOLLYWOOD—I was almost certain this past weekend would be an interesting battle at the box-office, but was I ever wrong. With a bevy of new films like “Paper Towns,” “Pixels,” “The Vatican Tapes” and “Southpaw” opening at multiplexes, there would be a shift at who reigned supreme, but it was “Ant-Man” who stayed on top.

The marvel superhero nabbed first place adding another $24.8 million to its total. In less than 2 weeks, the flick has already crossed the $100 million mark at the domestic box-office. “Pixels” nabbed second place with around $24 million. For a flick about video games and a bevy of big stars including Adam Sandler, one expected this movie to do much better business at the box-office.

“Minions” continues to be a powerhouse in theaters earning another $22.2 million. The Amy Schumer comedy “Trainwreck” landed in fourth place with around $17.3 million. In less than 2 weeks, the raunchy comedy has already surpassed the $50 million mark at the domestic box-office.

Rounding out the top five was the Jake Gyllenhaal boxing epic “Southpaw” with an impressive $16.5 million in its debut weekend. If the flick continues to impress moviegoers, it strengthens the chances of Gyllenhaal possibly earning that Best Actor nomination come awards season.
