For families looking for a movie, of course “Monsters vs. Aliens” is your pick. And with the voice of Reese Witherspoon in the lead role, it’s a must-see film for kids and parents alike. But if you are interested in a scary flick this week and only adults please! “The Haunting in Connecticut” is the film to see.
Actress Virginia Madsen, who is known as a great performer, is the lead in this film and she’s awesome. To put it mildly, Madsen just gets more attractive with years and obviously has improved as an actress. Kyle Gallner and Elias Koteas are also amazing in the film and let’s just say it’s a film not for the faint at heart. The plot revolves around a true story that has been hyped up for movie audiences. The horror thriller by director Peter Cornwell “The Haunting In Connecticut” charts one family's terrifying, real-life encounter with the dark forces of the supernatural. When the Campbell family moves to upstate Connecticut, they soon learn that their charming Victorian home has a disturbing history: not only was the house a transformed funeral parlor where inconceivable acts occurred, but the owner's clairvoyant son Jonah served as a demonic messenger, providing a gateway for spiritual entities to crossover,” says the distributor Lionsgate Productions.
But the plot is secondary in this film to the acting. Everyone is working collaboratively in this project, which often is not the case. Madsen carries most of the film with some of the younger stars making themselves standouts in the picture. Ty Wood and Erik J. Berg seem almost as charismatic as child stars as Haley Joel Osment did in “The Sixth Sense.” Though both boys have great parts in the film, they are surely not able to upstage Madsen. They do, however, make a go of it and deserve kudos for trying.
For a film that is surely not for all but has a niche audience of horror fans, it’s scary and sometimes so alarming that you want to grab a hand in the theater next to you. If the film has any deficit it’s that Madsen isn’t on the screen enough, but when she is, you just can’t take your eyes off her.
“The Haunting in Connecticut” gets Five of Five Stars for its special effects and acting.
