SAN FRANCISCO—On Thursday, June 16, at the Commonwealth Club, well-known environmental lawyer Robert F. Kennedy discussed the reasons behind his anxiety toward coal mining in America.

As mentioned in his documentary, “Last Mountain”, Kennedy discussed the dangers of coal mining and how coal corporations deliberately wipe out all information pointing toward evidence of their dynamiting the tops of mountains in order to mine coal and how that negatively affects air and water.

Kennedy has followed in his father’s footsteps in focusing on the mountain top of the Appalachia, in efforts to prevent coal companies from gaining access. He has completed a significant amount of work, 500 footage hours, in West Virginia, the heart of coal mine country, proving true the destruction that coal companies and their actions are causing. While America has taken steps toward eliminating the dynamiting of mountain tops to improve the air and water qualities, it somehow still continues to happen.

According to press release from the Berkeley Daily Planet, Kennedy believes and plans to prove that there are much “cleaner and safer ways to power the U.S. economy.” Kennedy has played a significant role in other developments of improving the environment. He assisted in defending and maintaining the cleanliness of New Yorkers’ and Hudson Valley residents’ water supply with “Riverkeeper the Watchdog” organization.

Kennedy has been published in many periodicals and written books of his own. “Crimes Against Nature,” one of his many projects, was a New York Times bestseller in 2004. The meeting took place at 6 p.m. at the San Francisco Commonwealth Club Office.
