BERKELEY
—November 10 marks the 95th game (including 2 rugby games) between the UC Berkeley Golden Bears and the USC Trojans. The Trojans currently lead the series 58-29-5.
The first football game between the two schools was on
October 23, 1915
and resulted in a win for the Trojans, 28-10.
The game being played this weekend is different from the game expected at the beginning of the season. Before the season began, fans anticipated a match up between the top ranked Trojans and the highly ranked Golden Bears.
This season, however, has been very unpredictable and filled with upsets. USC enters the game ranked No. 12, while
Cal
is tied with
Kentucky
at No. 24.
Though the game may be a bit different than what was anticipated, the game should still be one to watch.
The last time
Cal
beat USC was in 2003, when
Cal
won in the third overtime with a field goal by Tyler Fredrickson. Last year,
Cal
lead at the half 9-6, but lost when USC got two touchdowns in the fourth quarter.
Both teams are coming into this game with wins last weekend. USC won its homecoming game against
Oregon
State
. The Trojans have two losses, Stanford and
Oregon
.
Cal
broke its three game losing streak last week with a win against
Washington
State
. Before this, they lost to
Oregon
State
, UCLA, and
Arizona
State
.
Each team also has a player in the race for the Heisman.
Cal
’s DeSean Jackson has been one of the most exciting players to watch this year. Teams have been regularly kicking the ball away while punting to keep the ball away from Jackson, who has returned six punts for touchdowns. USC’s John David Booty was a highly praised candidate preseason. He missed three games after breaking a finger during the game against Stanford. He returned to the field last week against
Oregon
State
. These last several games of the season will be a large factor in his Heisman candidacy.
This will be
Cal
’s last home game of the season. They will be honoring their seniors before the game. This game is also the Joe Roth Memorial Game. Joe Roth transferred to
Cal
in 1975 and was considered a Heisman favorite for the 1976 season. Unfortunately, he was diagnosed with cancer that year and passed away February 1977. His jersey, No. 12, is
Cal
football’s only retired jersey.
For USC this weekend is known as the Weekender. Many USC students, fans and alumni will be driving or flying up for the game. A Friday night rally is held at “weekender headquarters,” this year at the Grand Hyatt on
Union Square
. There is also a pre-game rally at the Greek Theatre on the Berkeley Campus at
2 pm
. These rallies include appearances by the Spirit of Troy and the Song Girls.
The season isn’t over yet for either team. Both teams will be facing Pac-10 teams after this weekend.
Cal
will play
Washington
November 17. USC will face
Arizona
State
November 22. They both will be playing rivalry games on December 1, with
Cal
playing Stanford, and USC playing UCLA. Adding a twist to those games is that they will be playing teams the other has lost against. Stanford beat USC 24-23 on October 6.
Cal
lost to UCLA 21-30 on October 20.
