SAN FRANCISCO—Scott Leister, 21, of Castro Valley was killed when the Mercedes he was riding in was rear-ended by a Subaru going nearly 100 miles per hour on Sunday, August 17.  The incident occurred on the Bay Bridge around 2 a.m.

Jerell Puno, 22, of Fairfield, was the driver of the Subaru and was arrested by CHP officers on the suspicion of driving under the influence.  According to CHP Sgt. Trent Cross, “We do believe that alcohol or drugs were involved in the incident.”  After Puno rear-ended the Mercedes, both vehicles spun and hit the railing.  Puno was able to escape his damaged Subaru before it caught fire but Leister was unresponsive and pinned in the Mercedes.  Leister was later pronounced dead at the scene.  Leister’s brother Chris and two friends that had been in the Mercedes also escaped the incident with minor injuries.

Puno is facing charges of vehicular manslaughter while intoxicated, resisting arrest and other alcohol related charges.  Puno posted bail of $102,500 later that Sunday and is currently awaiting trial.

According to media reports, Leister was on break from the National Wilderness Leadership School, which is affiliated with the University of Utah.  From his Myspace page, you can see that Scott was a young man with a lot of friends who had a great sense of humor.
