SAN FRANCISCO—On Wednesday, August 18, Jelly’s Dance Club was allegedly closed in San Francisco as a result of a shooting in the parking lot on July 11. Jelly’s has asked others to join in their petition to keep the dance club open for several reasons. A petition from their website states that they are asking to reverse the decision from the port of San Francisco.

As a consequence of deadly shootings, Mayor Gavin Newsom signed a “legislation to give entertainment commission greater power to revoke problem club permits” on August 9. According to the statement made on the website of the Office of the Mayor, “Though our homicide rate so far this year remains at a historic low, we will not tolerate violence in our City’s neighborhoods or senseless shootings that occur near and around San Francisco nightclubs and social clubs.”

The main problem that the dance club has is that part of the business is run by musicians who are booking their venues in the club. Jelly’s also supports non-profit community fundraising.

One of the owners, who preferred to be unnamed, told San Francisco News that she is being “evicted” and has been in business for 16 years. The owner insists that the club is being evicted for monetary reasons and not because of the shooting that took place in the parking lot. “Violence is going all over the city,” said the owner, adding that the matter is separate from the business itself since “it is all about money.” Even though the club is closing, she stated that she has no personal problems with the city as she was born and raised in San Francisco. "If I were to say anything to the public, it would that I am very grateful,” she said.
