CONTRA COSTA COUNTY—On Saturday, September 27, a 25-year-old man was shot by a Contra Costa County Sheriff’s Deputy after the suspect hit the officer with his car.

The officer reportedly arrived at 5052 San Pablo Dam Road at approximately 7:40 p.m. in response to fights that erupted at the Creekside Terrace Apartments in El Sobrante. Soon after deputies arrived at the scene, one deputy—whose name has not been released—was struck. The suspect, now identified as 25-year-old Cary Menghi-Griffin, accelerated and struck the officer with his vehicle. The deputy then opened fire on the car, wounding Menghi-Griffin.

The suspect was taken to John Muir Medical Center in Walnut Creek and was arrested on suspicion of assault with a deadly weapon. Menghi-Griffin suffered minor bruises. The incident is still under investigation.
