LONDON – Giles Fielder-Civil, the father-in-law of singer Amy Winehouse is urging fan and music lovers around the world to stop buying her records. Why? Because he believes it may drive her to seek help for her drug addiction.
Fielder-Civil has believed for some time now that Amy Winehouse and his son Blake Fielder-Civil have been heavy into drug use. “I think they are recreational users of drugs and they are in control.” He reportedly told the British Broadcasting Corp. He claims that the two have tried and/or are using drugs such as cocaine, heroin, and crack cocaine, and that they are in “abject denial” about their problem.
Fielder-Civil believes there is only one way to make his daughter-in-law realize the error of her ways, and that is to send a message to her fans and ask them to stop buying her music. He believes that this will make Winehouse realize that her brash on-stage behavior and her drug problems are not acceptable.
There is also a belief that the singer’s label, Island Records, should be more involved in the actions of their artists. Fielder-Civil has stated that he thinks the company should be helping the couple get better rather than doing nothing. Since then, Island Records has put all of Winehouse’s commitments on hold and have been advising her to rest and take care of herself.
Amy Winehouse’s father has said that he doesn’t think a boycott of his daughters’ music will do any good. “It’s all clutching at straws,” said Mitch Winehouse.
“There’s only one way out of a problem like this, and it’s not done by locking them up or sectioning them off. At some point they are going to hit rock bottom and at that point they will say: listen, I don’t want to do this anymore."
Fans have expressed concern over Winehouse’s health after she cancelled numerous tour appearances, entering a rehab facility soon after. Just last week, pictures were seen of Winehouse bloody and battered after she reportedly had a scuffle with her husband in a
London hotel room. She has denied that her husband was the cause of her injuries, claiming that she harmed herself.
Just recently, Winehouse cancelled all of her remaining
U.S. tour dates, as well as an appearance and performance at this year’s MTV Video Music Awards. According to her record label, “The move is part of a continued effort to support Amy Winehouse’s well-being.”
