MALIBU—A break could be coming soon for those affected by the recent raging wildfires: lower property taxes. By having their homes reassessed, residents could receive a lower property tax amount.
According to the
Los Angeles Times, LA County Assessor Rick Auerbach will be trying to complete all requested reassessments within three weeks. “We’re getting a list of all damaged properties and as soon as the fire subside, a crew is going to go out and take a look at all of the houses,” he said.
Normally, residents receive their first notice of property taxes around December 10. This year, residents whose homes and property were affected by the fires can request that their payments be deferred until after a reassessment of the property is finished.
A period of 30 to 60 days will be granted to those who choose to go through with a reassessment. Property tax payments will need to be made within the period granted.
For more information or to request a reassessment, those who reside in unincorporated area are urged to call (213) 974-3211 and those in Malibu should call (310) 665-5413.
