Radio Host Michael Savage Under Fire Once Again

SAN FRANCISCO —Protesters stood outside of nationally syndicated radio host Michael Savage’s San Francisco studio on Sunday, July 27 and vehemently requested that Savage step down or be fired for comments he made about autistic children on a show aired July 16.

            Savage, who has become somewhat infamous for his controversial commentaries on socially sensitive issues on his radio show The Savage Nation, has faced the critique of individuals who find his conservative nationalism offensive several times in the past. In March 2006, the Catholic community was slighted by the commentator’s insinuation that the Catholic Church was breaking federal law in relation to their stance on immigration rights. Further concerning illegal immigration, Savage severely criticized students in July 2007 who were fasting as a political protest for immigration law reform. Further adding to Savage’s social condemnation, in Nov. 2007, the Muslim community was outraged by Savage’s seemingly anti-Muslim commentaries.

            Parents of autistic children, and community members alike, gathered Sunday afternoon in response to claims Savage made on his show that autistic children were being misdiagnosed. According to media reports, Savage stated that doctors were too quick to diagnose children with autism and went as far as to refer to the children as “brats” and “morons.”

            Savage has yet to apologize to the public for his comments, and despite the crowd of over 50 people who urged KNEW and Talk Radio Network, the stations that air The Savage Nation, to pull the commentator off the air, media reports reveal that Talk Radio Network publicly stated that they will not fire or suspend Savage.
