SAN FRANCISCO—And the award for best performance in a baseball game goes to Bengie Molina of the SF Giants.   Molina delivered a terrific performance as he helped his team complete a sweep of the San Diego Padres on Sunday, August 24, 2008 with a score of 7-4. He had a total of 3 hits, 1 homerun and a record 5 RBI’s in the game.   This is the Giants' first sweep of the San Diego Padres in more than five years.   The Giants defeated the Padres 5-0 on Friday and 4-3 on Saturday.   Making the victory bittersweet was the fact that it was pitcher Kevin Correia’s birthday.

He gave a tremendous effort in Sunday’s victory. He gave up 7 hits and 3 runs during the six innings he played.   He did manage to give up a single homerun to Padres star Brian Giles in the first inning, but he also struck out four players. The Giants offense got off to a slow start. The team went scoreless up until the fourth inning. By then, the Padres had already taken over the lead 3-1, but the Giants fought back scoring 2 runs in the fifth to tie-up the game 3-3.   An explosion occurred in the sixth inning thanks to Bengie Molina, who helped his team score 4 runs giving them control of the game, 7-3.

San Francisco star Fred Lewis contributed 3 runs and 3 hits in the game.   Players Randy Winn and Emmanuel Burriss had 1 run apiece and combined for a total of 4 hits between them.   Winn also had a single RBI in the game.

Padres’ players Kevin Kouzmanoff, Chase Headley and Edgar Gonzalez each contributed 1 run apiece during the game and had a total of 4 hits between them.   Brian Giles and Nick Hundley each delivered 1 hit and 1 RBI in the game.   San Diego’s pitching wasn’t stellar in Sunday’s loss.   Pitcher Josh Banks gave up 5 hits and 1 run during the three innings he played while pitchers Justin Hampson and Mike Adams gave up a total of 5 hits and 6 runs during the two innings they played.   Hampson did manage to strike out 1 player, but Adams wasn’t too successful.

Currently the Giants are on a five-game winning streak and let’s hope they can keep that streak going in the coming weeks.
