CINCINNATI—After winning only 1 game in their series against the Colorado Rockies, the San Francisco Giants were swept by the Cincinnati Reds with a loss of 9-3, on Sunday, August 31, 2008.   The Giants had great offense in the game, they scored 12 hits, the same number as the Cincinnati Reds, but they just weren’t able to score any runs.

Cincinnati scored the first run in the game in the first inning and then scored an additional 2 runs in the second inning to give them a 3-1, lead over San Francisco.   The Giants attempted to cut the Reds lead, thanks to a homerun by Emmanuel Burriss in the 4th, to make the score 3-2, but Cincinnati proved to be too dominant for the Giants as they scored 2 runs in the 5th, 1 in the 6th and 3 runs in the 7th to give them a 9-2 lead.   Burriss scored the Giants final run in the ninth, but by then it was already too late.

Leading the Giants in scoring were players Pablo Sandoval and Emmanuel Burriss, who scored the teams 3 runs.   Both players contributed 2 hits apiece for their team.   Aaron Rowand and Randy Winn also had 2 hits each in the game.   Burriss and Rowand contributed 1 RBI each.   Leading the Reds to victory was Jeff Keppinger who had 3 runs, 2 hits and 1 RBI.   While 1st baseman Joey Votto scored 4 hits and 4 RBI’s in Sunday’s victory.   Chris Dickerson scored 2 runs and had 1 hit in the game.

San Francisco pitcher Matt Cain didn’t play his best in Sunday’s loss.   He gave up 8 hits and 5 runs during the five innings he played.   He did manage to strike out 3 players.   Cincinnati pitcher Bronson Arroyo gave a fierce performance.   Despite giving up 10 hits, he only gave up 2 runs during the 7 innings he played.   He also struck out 5 players.

It’s not likely for the Giants to make the playoffs this season, but they can still shakeup the standings in the NL West as they do battle against the Arizona Diamondbacks and the Los Angeles Dodgers in September.   The two teams only have 2 games separating them from the top position, so anything can happen.
