HOLLYWOOD—There’s something about the summer months when most of us just can’t wait until the fall TV season, but for others summer brings some of the best shows of the season. “Pretty Little Liars” has already become the must-see TV series of the summer, but another series for those reality diehards is CBS’s “Big Brother.” That’s right; our favorite camera-driven series is back for a 13th season.
Season 12 was a memorable one with such spitfire houseguests as Brittany, Brandon and Rachel, none of whom were afraid to speak their minds. There hasn’t been a season without memorable houseguests who you either love or hate; there is no in-between. Who can forget Chima’s outburst that led to her being booted from the house, or what about the surprise return of Rachel after being evicted last season?

What fascinates audiences about “Big Brother” is the psychological aspect of the series. Viewers can easily place themselves into the contestants’ shoes. What would be your reaction to being stuck in a house with a group of strangers? You’re likely to react the same way as those depicted on the TV screen. Another reason the reality hit works so well is because of its host Julie Chen, or as some call her, the Chenbot. Her personality is likable, and she’s not afraid to call out contestants on their antics.
For those who are completely unaware as to what occurs in the "Big Brother" house, a group of contestants are locked away in a house for more than two months. During that time, they are completely cut off from the outside world; no television, no cell phones, no magazines and no internet. Each week, a houseguest is evicted. The last person standing wins $500,000. It sounds simple, but it's never that easy. There are house challenges each week for luxury items including food, but there’s also the HOH (Head of Household) competition that keeps that person safe from eviction. But it’s not the “Big Brother” house without a few surprises.
Each season, the show has a unique twist that leaves audiences salivating. Season four saw the reuniting of ex’s, season five encountered identical twins playing the game as one, season seven was full of all-stars, season 11 saw the houseguests working in popular high school cliques and last season we were introduced to the saboteur, a houseguest wreaking havoc inside the home.
There are only eight new houseguests playing the game this season, and most of them are a bit older than usual. Audiences will be delighted to hear that this season the twist is dynamic duos. Our new houseguests will be shocked to the core when they discover which previous duos from past seasons will once again play the game. There are tons of rumors as to who these players will be, including Brendon and Rachel, Will and Mike, Evel Dick and Daniele, Enzo and Hayden, Jeff and Jordan, just to name a few. Honestly, this is a huge twist in the game, but how about CBS giving us another all-star season? Even better, let’s reunite previous winners of the game for another go-around.
It’s rarely occurred where the winner of each season is remembered besides Will Kirby. Yep, I said it: most of the winners are forgettable, so to speak. Janelle, Danielle, Allison, Jeff and Brittany were fan favorites on their seasons, yet failed to capture the big prize. Just imagine the pure elation of having strategic gamers, athletic powerhouses and hardcore liars all in one house: reality television at its best.
While the audience has an idea of the twist for this season, as Julie Chen has said time and time again, “expect the unexpected” because in the “Big Brother” house, anything can happen. It’ll be interesting to see the interaction between the new houseguests and previous ones from past seasons. Who’ll stand out as fan favorites this season? I believe they will be Adam, Kalia, Shelly or Cassi, but only time will tell! Cheers to what is sure to be a bold, explosive and must-see season. “Big Brother 13” airs Thursdays at 9 p.m. and Sundays and Wednesdays at 8 p.m. on CBS.
