SAN FRANCISCO—Former left fielder Barry Bonds has returned to the San Francisco Giants, taking on the role of special adviser to CEO Larry Baer.

“We are delighted to welcome Barry back home to the Giants. As one of the greatest players of all-time, Barry’s contributions to our organization are legendary. He joins Willie Mays, Willie McCovey, Orlando Cepeda and other distinguished alumni who help advise the club and we look forward to working with him again,” Baer told reporters.

Prior to this position, Bonds, 52, who played 15 seasons with the Giants from 1993 to 2007, hit a total of 762 home runs, and served as the hitting coach for the Miami Marlins. He was dismissed after one season in 2016.

As the team’s special adviser, Bonds will contribute to marketing techniques, community relations, and team promotions. He will also participate in a minor league organization. According to the San Francisco Giants organization, Bonds will represent the organization at a variety of events in San Francisco.

Baer has stated that he is looking forward to witnessing Bonds’ interactions with younger players in the system.

Bonds is a San Carlos native, and his father, Bobby Bonds played for the San Francisco Giants from 1968 to 1974.

“I am excited to be back home with the Giants and join the team in an official capacity. San Francisco has always been my home and the Giants will always be my family. I look forward to spending time with the team, young players in the system as well as the Bay Area community,” said Barry Bonds.
