SAN FRANCISCO—A Bay Area Railway Transit Officer was injured by a gunshot wound inflicted by a suspect on Friday, December 25. The suspect has been identified as 27-year-old Charles Goetting. Goetting fled from the scene and was shot by a second police officer, according to San Francisco police officials. The suspect was then airlifted to a hospital and remains in stable condition.

According to police, BART police officers were patrolling the area at the time of the incident. Shortly after 11:20 a.m., the officers noticed the suspect walking from a U-haul in the parking garage of the Hayward BART station where the U-haul had a broken window.

Police stopped Goetting and learned he had been listed on probation for drug and gun possession, and burglary. Goetting was initially compliant with officers, but when the officers asked him to put his arms above his head, Goetting pulled out a handgun.

Goetting fired, shooting one officer in the arm. The second officer ducked and shot at Goetting multiple times, according to Deputy BART Police Chief Jeffrey Jennings. Both Goetting and the police officer received medical attention. The wounded officer was escorted to a medical center by a police cruiser, and Goetting was air-flown to Eden Medical Center in Castro Valley for surgery after being given CPR by Hayward emergency responders.

According to Jennings, Goetting had multiple addresses listed in several cities including: San Ramon, Concord, and Antioch. Jennings also stated that the handgun used to shoot the officer had been reported as stolen, and the license plate on the U-haul had been switched with that of another vehicle.

Officers were able to search the U-haul and found a backpack containing a ski mask, BB gun, and several tools used for burglary. Police are continuing to investigate video surveillance of content leading up to the shooting.
