HOLLYWOOD—As expected, “Black Panther” is not just taking the country by storm, but the box-office. For a third consecutive weekend, the comic book superhero reigned supreme at the box-office maintaining the top spot by adding another $65 million to its tally. Since its release the flick has earned over $500 million at the domestic box-office. That is massive in just under 3 weeks, and on a global scale the film has amounted over $900 million.
There were a few new debuts at theaters that attempted to tussle the top spot away from “Black Panther,” but were not as victorious. “Red Sparrow,” starring Oscar-winner Jennifer Lawrence landed in second place with a modest $17 million haul. Here’s hoping strong word-of-mouth buzz helps generate bigger box-office returns as the film is far more entertaining than I expected. Nabbing third place was the remake of the 1974 classic “Death Wish,” but with Bruce Willis taking on the role of vigilante made famous by Charles Bronson. The remake did not boost huge numbers at the box-office debuting with a meek $13 million.
The comedy “Game Night” dropped to fourth place with $10.7 million, and has since amounted over $33 million at the domestic box-office. Rounding out the top five is “Peter Rabbit” with $10 million. The family-friendly flick which sparked a little bit of controversy, has earned over $84 million at the domestic box-office since its release nearly a month ago. This weekend could be the week that “Black Panther” gets dethroned as Oprah Winfrey and “A Wrinkle in Time” arrives. That won’t be the only flick battling for supremacy as the sequel, “The Strangers: Prey at Night” and the dark comedy “Gringo.”
