HOLLYWOOD HILLS—Cameron James Pettit, 28, was arrested and charged on Wednesday, September 4 with distributing deadly fentanyl-laced pills that triggered an accidental drug overdose of rapper Mac Miller, 26, whose real name Malcolm James McCormick.
Pettit has been charged with one count of distribution of a controlled substance by U.S Magistrate Judge Maria Audero.
On September 7, 2018, the rapper was found unresponsive in his Studio City home after snorting the drugs supplied by Pettit.
The Los Angeles County Medical Examiner determined Miller’s death was ruled as an accidental overdose of alcohol, cocaine and fentanyl.
According to the criminal complant filed in the Central District of California, documents allege that Miller requested drugs from Pettit known by the street name “percs,” which is a prescribed painkiller containing oxycodon. Investigators found that Pettit supplied Miller with a deadly counterfeit concoction of xanax, cocaine and fentanyl which is stronger than heroin.
Criminal documents further explain that Pettit was suppling the musician with narcotics for several months prior to his death. Text messages also showed Pettit agreed to give Miller, 30-milligram oxycodone pills, cocaine and Xanax.
“Fentanyl is a killer, and it’s never more deadly than when it’s disguised to look like a genuine pharmaceutical pill, people should know that if they consume black market opioid pills they’re playing Russian roulette,” said Assistant U.S. Atty. Matthew J. Jacobs in a press release.
If convicted as charged, Pettit could face up to 20 years in federal prison.
