SAN FRANCISCO—United States Coast Guard crews discovered the corpse of a man reported missing on February 16 after his canoe sank while boating in San Mateo.

The man, identified by the coroner’s office as 22-year-old Luis Ruvalcaba, went missing at 10:20 p.m.  Ruvalcaba was fishing with his fiancé and father when their 12-foot canoe took-in water.

After several attempts to bail-out the water, the trio abandoned ship.

Guillermo Ruvalcaba Sandoval, 49, was located around 2 a.m. and was taken to the hospital where he died. The Coast Guard search for the family Ruvalcaba spanned from Oyster Point to Coyote Point.

Ruvalcaba’s fiancé, Larissa Castaneda, 22, was found at 1:20 a.m. Tuesday, and was rescued by a Coast Guard helicopter.

After several attempts to bail water, the group abandoned ship.

“The crew aboard the South San Francisco Fire Marine Unit heard a cry for help while search about one mile off Coyote Point–that occurred about 1 a.m. this morning,” said Coast Guard spokesman Lt. Jacob Aulner. “The Coast Guard helicopter hovered with a spotlight over the woman and the marine unit boat crew from the San Francisco Fire Department pulled her from the water and brought her to shore.”
