SAN JOSE—San Jose has issued two-year contract extensions to forward Ryan Carpenter and defensemen Tim Heed and Joakim Ryan, disclosed GM Doug Wilson in a press release.

Carpenter stands at six feet tall and weighs 195 pounds. The 26 year-old was born in Oviedo, Florida and signed with San Jose as a free agent on March 25, 2014. He collected 39 points (comprised of 14 goals and 25 assists) with a plus-17 rating. He posted 145 shots on goal in 54 games last season with the San Jose Barracuda, finishing sixth in both points and assists, T-8th in goals, first in shorthanded assists and fifth in shots on goal.

Carpenter played in all 15 of the Barracuda’s 2017 Calder Cup Playoffs games. He finished first on the team in goals with nine, eight assists, and points. He also tied for first in plus/minus ratings (+6). In 11 games with the Sharks this season, he scored two goals and two assists (totaling four points) and earned a plus-5 rating.

In 206 games with the Worcester Sharks/San Jose Barracuda franchise, Carpenter collected 130 points (44 goals and 86 assists). He attained a plus-42 rating, 457 shots on goal, and 105 penalty minutes. During the 2015-2016 season, he led the Barracuda in points with 55, assists with 37, and plus/minus (+20), and was admitted to the 2016 AHL All-Star Game.

Before the NHL, Carpenter played collegiate-level hockey at Bowling Green State University. In 100 games, he posted 79 points (37 goals and 42 assists) and 51 penalty minutes, while serving as team captain his sophomore and junior seasons. During his freshman season (2011-2012), he received the Bowling Green Rookie of the Year Award and led the team in assists with 19 and points with 30.

“Ryan’s leadership throughout the 2016-2017 season and into the Western Conference Final was an integral part of the Barracuda’s success. His outstanding play in the playoffs is a testament to his ability to perform in big games, and his offensive abilities are an asset to the San Jose Sharks,” said Joe Will, Sharks Assistant General Manager and Barracuda General Manager.

Carpenter made his NHL debut on December 12, 2015 against the visiting Minnesota Wild. He scored his first NHL goal on November 30, 2016 against the Los Angeles Kings.


Heed hails from Goteborg, Sweden. He was originally selected by the Anaheim Ducks in the fifth round (132nd overall) of the 2010 NHL Entry Draft. San Jose signed him on May 24, 2016 as a free agent.

In his debut season with the Barracuda, Heed posted 56 points (14 goals and 42 assists) and a plus-14 rating in 55 games. He ranked first amongst AHL defensemen in points per game (1.02, min. 25 GP), fourth in points, third in assists, and T-7th in goals.

Heed totaled eight power-play goals, ranking T-6th, and his four game-winning goals ranked him at T-5th, in route to being chosen as the 2016-17 AHL Second All-Star Team. In 15 playoff games the Barracuda, Heed attained 10 points (three goals and seven assists). He ranked 2nd in defensemen scoring and T-third overall in points.

Heed appeared in 191 Swedish Hockey League (with Skelleftea and Vaxjo) games, compiling 76 points (21 goals 55 assists) and a plus-13 rating during the regular season. He added on five goals and 23 assists in 53 postseason games in Sweden’s top men’s league.

During his time with Skelleftea, Heed received the SHL title during the 2013-2014 season. The following season, he was appointed the Salming Trophy (for the SHL’s Defenseman of the Year award), as he scored the highest number of goals among all defenseman.

Heed represented Sweden in the Euro Hockey Tour in 2014 and 2015. He recorded one goal and a plus-three rating in three games. He also represented his home country at the junior level, totaling four goals and seven assists in 12 games.

“Tim proved to be an integral part of the Barracuda’s run to the first Western Conference Finals in franchise history, was named one of the top defensemen in the AHL and was recalled on many occasions to San Jose. His consistent play and production from the back-end are a tremendous fit with our group of defensemen,” said Will.

The 6 foot, 185 pound 26 year-old made his first NHL appearance on January 11 in Calgary, Alberta.


Ryan is a native of Rumson, New Jersey. The 23 year-old, 5 foot and 11 inch tall, 185-pound defenseman was drafted by San Jose in the seventh round (198th overall) of the 2012 NHL Draft. His mother is former tennis star Catarina Lindqvist, who hails from Sweden.

In 65 games with the Barracuda last season, Ryan posted a career-peaking 10 goals and 39 assists (for a total of 49 points) and a plus-27 rating. He ranked 2nd amongst defensemen in goals, assists, and points in addition to leading the team in plus/minus (T-fourth in the league). With a career-peaking 185 shots on goal, he led all San Jose blue-liners.

In 15 playoff games, Ryan ranked 3rd amongst all AHL rear guards in all three categories and exceeded all Barracuda defensemen in goals with four, assists with seven (tied), and points with 11.

Ryan has attained 79 points (comprised of 12 goals and 67 assists) along with a plus-34 rating in 138 AHL career games. He added 14 points (4 goals, 10 assists) in 19 career AHL playoff games. On February 6, Ryan received his first NHL call-up with the Sharks.

In 123 games with the Cornell University Big Red, Ryan recorded 78 points (19 goals and 59 assists) over four seasons. He was admitted to the 2014-2015 All-ECAC First Team, named a finalist for the 2014-2015 ECAC Best Defensive Defenseman award, 2013-2014 All-Ivy League First Team, 2013-2014 All-ECAC Hockey Second Team,  and 2012-2013 All-Ivy League Second Team.

He was appointed ECAC Hockey Rookie of the Week during his freshman season in 2011-2012. In 2013-2014, he earned the Nicky Bawlf Award, which is presented to Cornell’s most valuable player (MVP).

Ryan was selected to represent Sweden during the 2010 World U17 Challenge and 2010 World Jr. A Challenge.

“Joakim served as an anchor on both sides of the puck for the Barracuda this past season. He continued his stellar play in the AHL playoffs and we’re very excited to see him compete for an NHL spot come training camp,” Will disclosed in a statement.
