SAN FRANCISCO—San Francisco Supervisor David Campos proposed on Tuesday, November 29 spending $5 million in the next two years to provide legal defense for undocumented immigrants who could face deportation under President-elect Donald Trump’s administration.

The legislation has been proposed in the sanctuary city, 49 days before Trump’s inauguration.

“What we are going to do is get the people that are criminal and have criminal records, gang members, drug dealers, we have a lot of these people, probably two million, it could be even three million, we are getting them out of our country or we are going to incarcerate. But we’re getting them out of our country, they’re here illegally,” stated Donald Trump during a post-election interview with 60 Minutes.

Trump has argued deporting an estimated 3 million immigrants who have been responsible for committing violent crimes. He plans to hold any federal fundings from cities that hold sanctuary policies. San Francisco has an estimated 44,000 undocumented immigrants.

Half of the budget from this proposal will be in hands of San Francisco Public Defender Jeff Adachi, who will hire 10 attorneys and 5 paralegals in efforts to help block deportations. The rest of the funds will be donated to nonprofits that provide legal resources for undocumented immigrants.

Several cities across the United States have vowed to support immigrants in their region. San Francisco will be one of the cities in the nation with similar legislation approved.
