LOS ANGELES—The bid for the 2024 Summer Olympic Games is up for grabs and the city of Los Angeles is right in the fold to win the honor of being the host city.

Officials said on Friday, July 15, that the bid got a boost when Congress voted to throw their support behind the event happening in Los Angeles.

According to a statement from Sen. Dianne Feinstein, a resolution backing the bid was unanimously passed by the House of Representatives earlier in the week. Feinstein co-sponsored the bid with Georgia senator Johnny Isakson.

Feinstein commented, “This resolution shows the International Olympic Committee that Congress is united behind Los Angeles to host the 2024 Summer Olympics.”

She continued about Los Angeles’ “rich sporting legacy and history of cultural innovation make it the perfect backdrop to host a modern Olympiad.”

“Los Angeles is an international city that truly embodies the Olympic spirit and is ready to welcome the entire world to the United States,” she said.

Budapest, Hungary; Hamburg, Germany; Rome and Paris are also in the mix to host the 2024 Olympic Games.

“We are welcoming five outstanding and highly qualified candidate cities,” International Olympic Committee President Thomas Bach said in a statement.

The International Olympic Committee is expected to select the host city at the 130th Committee Session on September 13, 2017.
