HOLLYWOOD—Well, the summer box-office is in full-force people. Memorial Day has dawned upon us and it was a battle royal at the box-office between “Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2,” “Alien: Covenant,” “Baywatch” and “Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Men Tell No Tales.” So who would be victorious in this gargantuan battle, well Johnny Depp and company of course! The fifth chapter in the “Pirates” franchise rose to the top taking in over $62 million over the weekend, adding numbers for Memorial Day the action-adventure topped off with around $77 million domestically, and over $200 million globally.

“Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2” which took a back seat thanks to “Alien: Covenant” last week, pushed its way into second place with around $24 million during the four-day holiday weekend. Not bad people for a flick that was expected to be ousted by “Baywatch.” Speaking of “Baywatch,” that flick flopped and not in a good way. The TV adaptation starring Dwayne Johnson and Zac Efron earned a dismal $23 million during its opening weekend. The flick cost more than $70 million to make, and with “Wonder Woman” coming next weekend, “Baywatch” might need a life vest or two to survive.

Landing in fourth place was “Alien: Covenant” with $13.2 million, which after only 2 weeks in theaters the sixth chapter in the franchise has already grossed over $60 million at the domestic box-office. Rounding out the top five was the teen drama “Everything, Everything” with $7.8 million.

As noted, the box-office will be a battle ground from now till August with major flicks hitting theaters. This weekend, we get our first take on rather a female superhero can hold her own at the box-office as Gal Gadot brings “Wonder Woman” to the big screen. I’m skeptical, but I suspect “Wonder Woman” might have an edge and rise to the top spot next week compared to “Pirates of the Caribbean.”
