SAN FRANCISCO—Andres Roemer, Mexico’s Consul General in San Francisco, invited Donald Trump to attend the MEX I AM festival next week during an interview with KGO-TV.

The MEX I AM festival, which debuted last year, is a week-long event that celebrates Mexican culture.

Roemer emphasized that the festival could help alter the Republican presidential candidate’s feeling toward Mexicans.

“Oh, he’s more than invited,” Roemer told KGO-TV. “I would love that he comes because we are just bringing a sample of creativity, bringing the best of Mexico which is its people, its flavors, its colors, all around the world.”

In an interview last month with CNN host Don Lemon, Trump said that if “you look at the statistics of people coming, you look at the statistics on rape, on crime, on everything coming in illegally into this country it’s mind-boggling.”

When Lemon questioned the validity of the statement, Trump fired back.

“Well, somebody’s doing the raping, Don,” Trump said. “I mean somebody’s doing it. Who’s doing the raping? Who’s doing the raping?”

Following the controversial remarks, multiple companies and networks terminated their business relationship with the presidential candidate including NBC, Univision, Macy’s and ESPN.

According to the festival’s website, this year’s celebration will feature “some of the best performers from various genres and traditions, as well as presentations from some of the most influential Mexicans in their fields of expertise around the world.”

The MEX I AM festival is free and begins July 19.
