Explosion Injures CHP Officer

TREASURE ISLAND—A California Highway Patrol officer was injured after his police vehicle caught fire, causing its explosion near Treasure Island on Monday, January 26.

The fire was first detected by the CHP officer when he realized that smoke was emanating from the trunk of his patrol car as he was crossing the Eastern span of the Bay Bridge.

The patrol car and vehicle erupted in flames near the Treasure Island exit.

The officer promptly pulled-over, taking the Treasure Island exit, fleeing the burning vehicle before it was engulfed in flames.

The trunk of the patrol vehicle exploded, an explosion that was caught on video by passerby Sejim Lin and obtained by CNN.

Another CHP officer who responded to the scene of the fire was injured by falling debris scattered by the sudden explosion. The officer’s injuries were not life-threatening.

The identity of both CHP officers remains unknown. The cause of both the fire and the explosion is still under investigation.
