SAN FRANCISCO—Passengers on Flight 2436, departing on Southwest Airlines at San Francisco International Airport, were delayed for about an hour Wednesday morning due to a suspicious odor coming from a luggage bag. When airline crews detected the odor, firefighters were called to investigate the source.

Upon first investigation, firefighters were unable to locate the cause of the smell; after being called a second time, it was determined an aerosol hairspray can was the cause. Passengers tweeted updates throughout the incident.
The flight to Chicago Midway Airport, initially intended for takeoff at 6 a.m., was cleared to fly shortly after 7 a.m.
