SAN FRANCISCO—San Francisco police officers announced they were responding to reports of a police-involved shooting on the roof of a construction site around 4:55 p.m. on Wednesday, November 11.

The incident took place at St. Luke’s Memorial Hospital construction site at 3555 Cesar Chavez, near Valencia Street in the outer Mission District. Roads within the two-three block radius were closed off to oncoming traffic as a result of the fatal officer-involved shooting.

The San Francisco Police Department has not released the identity of the suspect. Police Chief Greg Suhr described the gunman to be a Hispanic male in his 20s, wearing a dark hooded sweatshirt and white overalls. The suspect had allegedly robbed a sporting goods store in San Bruno earlier that day.

Police reports indicate that the suspect had stolen a rifle and ammunition from Big 5 Sporting Goods, and was armed with multiple firearms. “He then made his way to San Francisco, where he somehow made his way up to the roof of a service elevator and opened fire as San Francisco officers responded to the scene,” says Suhr. There were no reports of any other injuries during the shooting.

San Francisco residents reported hearing gunshots around 4:30 p.m., St. Luke Hospital employees stated that the police shooting began during an altercation nearby the hospital’s emergency room. The argument escalated and eventually moved to the construction site on the new hospital’s rooftop, where construction workers called the police.

St. Luke’s was on lockdown during the investigation, and a shelter-in-place was implemented during the two-hour span. Suhr announced that San Francisco police officers opened fire on the suspect “just after 5 p.m.” Police cleared the lockdown after officers reported that the suspect had died.

According to SFPD Police Spokesman Albie Esparza, the suspect was shot by several officers.
