HOLLYWOOD—I have been eagerly, and I mean eagerly awaiting the release of the upcoming “Halloween” trailer after it was unleashed at Cinema Con in Las Vegas in April. Well, after nearly 6 weeks of waiting, fans of the horror genre were treated with this first look of the upcoming reboot, sequel, remake (I’ll be honest, I’m not sure what to call it, but I would argue at this point it seems like a direct sequel to the 1978 classic).
There is plenty of good news about this upcoming entry into the franchise. Jamie Lee Curtis returns to the iconic role. Yes, I know what many of you are thinking, she died in “Halloween: Resurrection!?” Well in Hollywood, you can always rewrite the story, and this latest entry is ignoring all the sequels after the original. Smart move considering most of those flicks were subpar and never came anywhere close to touching the classic, which not only defined horror genre, but introduced horror as we know now it.
The synopsis teases that Laurie Strode (Curtis) has one final encounter with the boogeyman aka Michael Myers after he escapes the sanitarium, yet again, after being locked away for nearly 40 years. I sense tons of echoes to the original people. As we know how the tale plays out, Michael Myers heads back to Haddonfield to settle a score with the babysitter that survived repeated attacks by him.
Joining Curtis for mayhem and potential victims on Michael’s list includes her daughter Karen (Judy Greer), her granddaughter Allyson (Andi Matichak), Allyson’s pals and tons of Haddonfield residents not prepared for the mayhem this psychopath is about to unleash.
The trailer does a stellar job of giving very little away to the audience. It opens with a documentary crew deciding to pay Michael Myers a visit inside the sanitarium where he has been locked away for 40 years. Per usual something transpires, Michael escapes and he heads back to his hometown to settle a score. Now, I will admit trailer gave me a slight hint of “Halloween H20,” the minor difference is Laurie Strode seems way more developed this time around than that movie which came out nearly 20 years ago.
The trailer also notes that Laurie and Michael are not siblings, as her granddaughter Allyson deals with the turmoil of her family going bonkers around Halloween, as does her mother Karen. The trailer shows Michael is not messing around, after torturing a woman inside a bathroom stall, dropping bloody teeth over the stall, Laurie’s going full-blown Linda Hamilton with a shotgun and of course that climatic end, which sees a babysitter trying to close a closet door for a kid, only to discover Michael Myers is blocking the door and ready to attack.
The film is written by David Gordon Green and Danny McBride, with Green taking over directorial duties. Oh, I have to point out that John Carpenter is scoring the music for the flick, so be prepared to have chills emote from the spine every time you hear that classic music. Check out the trailer above.
“Halloween” arrives in theaters on October 19, just in time for Halloween people!
