HOLLYWOOD—This has been a terrible summer at the box-office America. I have not seen numbers this bleak in years, I mean August has never been the greatest month for flicks, but even in previous years we’ve seen some flicks manage to surprise moviegoers like “Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 1” and the 2007 remake of “Halloween.” For the third consecutive weekend, “The Hitman’s Bodyguard” won the weekend with just over $10 million. I guess people really wanted to laugh the past 3 weeks considering all the utter chaos unfolding in our country.
“Annabelle: Creation” managed to slide into second place with revenue that was near a perfect match to numbers it did last weekend in theaters with just over $7 million. The prequel could indeed see itself cross the $100 million mark at the domestic box-office before it ends its run in theaters. The thriller “Wind River” starring Jeremy Renner and Elisabeth Olsen earned third place with just under $6 million.
The animated flick “Leap!” dropped to fourth place with $4.8 million bringing its domestic gross to a very disappointing $11 million. I can’t recall the last time an animated flick performed so badly at the multiplex. Rounding out the top five is the action-comedy “Logan Lucky” with $4.4 million. So for those who have been eager to see a scary flick, look no further than next week’s arrival of the highly anticipated remake of Stephen King’s classic “It.”
The flick looks scary as hell, and early reviews note it is one of the scariest horror flicks to date. Not to mention box-office predictions has the flick earning over $50 million in its debut weekend. I suspect that number might be even higher, and considering its rated-R that is quite impressive America!
