HOLLYWOOD—August is over, and the summer box-office proved to be one of the worst in recent history if you ask me. There were so many summer blockbusters that crashed and burned barely crossing the $100 million mark, or not nearly taking a bite out of the box-office as so many expected. So prepare for Oscar fare and dramatic pieces to hit theaters with school back in session.
Last week’s champ, “The Hitman’s Bodyguard” managed to hold its grip on moviegoers with a weak $10.1 million. Yes, that debut is likely a result of Hurricane Harvey ravaging the South and the big Mayweather vs. McGregor boxing match taking over Las Vegas and most TVs. The comedy starring Samuel L. Jackson and Ryan Reynolds has grossed over $38 million in just 2 weeks in multiplexes.
Nabbing second place was the horror hit “Annabelle: Creation” with $7.4 million. The prequel has now amounted over $77 million in just 3 weeks in theaters. The animated featured “Leap!” debuted to a paltry $5 million, while the thriller “Wind River” managed to earn fourth place with $4.4 million. The thriller has since earned just under $10 million after a month in theaters.
Rounding out the top five was the action-flick “Logan Lucky” with just under $4.4 million. It’s possible “Logan Lucky” and “Wind River” can swap spots come Monday when official box-office numbers are released. Don’t expect any new releases next weekend as Labor Day ushers in, but be prepared to scream on September 8, when the highly anticipated remake of “It” hits theaters!
