WALNUT CREEK—On Monday, March 27, motorists witnessed a white horse and a brown mule running across Interstate 680.

According to the California Highway Patrol, they got a call at 7:25 a.m. of two horses causing traffic issues on I-680.

Steve Burdo with Contra Costa County Animal Services was in charge of the operation to safely apprehend and return the animals back to a safe environment. The animals broke through a fence about a mile away.

There were no reports of any injuries or accidents because of the incident. Both the horse and the mule used the on-ramp to access the highway, according to video evidence and eyewitnesses on the scene.

Authorities closed the highway to prevent any possible accidents to the animals or motorists.  Videos taken by drivers and those in the vicinity of the intersection assisted with officials being able to apprehend the animals.
