SAN FRANCISCO—San Francisco inmates and deputies were sent to the hospital after being exposed to fentanyl on Tuesday, October 8.

An inmate at the San Francisco County Jail was unresponsive on Tuesday evening leading deputies  giving the inmate CPR and Narcan to revive him. Four additional inmates displayed similar symptoms and were also treated with Narcan.

Narcan is a medication that reverses the effects of opioid overdose.

All five deputies who performed CPR were exposed to the fentanyl and taken to local hospitals in San Francisco for treatment. Three deputies later displayed symptoms similar to the exposure of fentanyl and were taken to the hospital.

Fentanyl is a synthetic opioid that is 50 to 100 times stronger than morphine. Officials are looking into the cause of the exposure of the drug.
