SAN FRANCISCO—San Francisco Mayor Edwin M. Lee and City Administrator Naomi M. Kelly announced on Wednesday, June 7 that Linda Gerull was appointed as the Director of Department of Technology and City Chief Information Officer.

According to a press release from the Mayor’s Office, Gerull started her career as a Civil Engineer with the Tennessee Valley Authority. She served as the GIS Manager for 15 years for Pierce County in Tacoma, Washington before being named IT Director for the county in 2009. While working as the IT Director, she was responsible for overseeing 24 county departments, 45 subscribing agencies and 60 districts that were using Tacoma County’s 640 software systems. She holds a Bachelor’s degree in Civil Engineering from the University of Tennessee.

“Linda’s unique combination of public and private sector experience will help the Department of Technology continue to strengthen its services and the City’s overall IT infrastructure,” said Mayor Lee. “I especially welcome Linda’s proven track record of delivering technology solutions which improve government services.”

“We were seeking a hands-on IT leader who understands IT operations and comes with a strong focus on customer service,” said Kelly. “Linda has the passion and skills to help the department successfully fulfill its mission and meet its goal of being the IT partner of choice.”

The Department of Technology has a budget of $113 million and staff of 228 employees, and aims to improve government services, the community, and the lives of employees, residents, businesses and visitors of the City and County of San Francisco through smart and responsive use of technology.

The department provides many of the core IT services vital for city operations through its management of city data centers, telecommunications, Fiber WAN, SFGovTV, cybersecurity, web services, public safety radio system maintenance, application support for citywide services such as email, and installation and maintenance of over 240 miles of underground fiber. Gerull will begin her service in the Director/CIO position on July 17.
