SANTA MONICA—Well the awards season chugs on with the 21st Annual Critics Choice Awards which were held at the Barker Hangar with comedian TJ Miller hosting the festivities. The funny guy kicked off the show with a neat dance routine involving for sidekicks who were there just there for fun.
The night’s big winner was none other than “Spotlight” which won the prize for Best Picture. So after being overlooked at the Golden Globes, this win cut provide some momentum for the journalist driven drama that focusing on the uncovering of the Catholic Church priests scandal. The movie outside won the prize for Best Acting Ensemble. However, the big winner of the night was “Mad Max: Fury Road” which took home 9 awards including Best Director for George Miller. Hmm, I think Miller’s win could be indicative of who will reign supreme at the Academy Awards, especially Ridley Scott was overlooked.
As predicted Brie Larson picked up the award for Best Actress for her work in “Room.” The actress was not in attendance at the ceremony because of work commitments. For Best Actor Leonardo DiCaprio took the prize for his riveting work in “The Revenant.” Ok people, it looks like Larson and DiCaprio will win top honors in the acting races this year. The only way I see that not happening if there is an upset at the upcoming Screen Actors Guild Awards.
Sylvester Stallone is looking like the front-runner for the Best Supporting Actor prize for his performance in the boxing drama “Creed.” While the race for Best Supporting Actress continues to be up in the air, but Alicia Vikander was victorious for the critics for her work in “The Danish Girl.” “The Big Short” picked up a few awards including Best Adapted Screenplay and Best Actor in a Comedy for Christian Bale.
While the snub by the Academy put a frown on many faces, “See You Again” from “Furious 7” won the prize for Best Song. And in a moment that may have been the best of the night was seeing Jacob Tremblay take the stage to accept his award for Best Young Actor/Actress for his work on “Room.” Still trying to wrap my mind around how this actor was not considered for the Best Actor at the Oscars this year; it’s a travesty people.
Yeah, I was slightly thrown off to discover that this year’s ceremony clocked in a little over 3 hours. I’m so use to it being only 2 hours, well this year the critics decided to combine the TV and movie world similar to what the SAG and Golden Globe ceremonies indulge in. In the comedy arena it was “Master of None” that won the top prize, while “Mr. Robot” won Best Drama Series.
For acting accolades, Rami Malek “Mr. Robot” and Carrie Coon “The Leftovers” won awards for Best Actor and Best Actress in a Drama Series. For Best Actress in a Comedy Series, Rachel Bloom picked up her second prize this year for her work on “My Crazy Ex-Girlfriend,” while Jeffrey Tambor won for Best Actor in a Comedy Series for “Transparent.”
The lady of the hour, Amy Schumer continued her terrific 2015, with more love for 2016 as she was presented the MVP Award by director Judd Apatow. Other winners of the night include Andre Braugher, Mayim Bialik for Best Supporting Actor and Actress in a Comedy Series for “Brooklyn Nine-Nine” and “The Big Bang Theory.” While Christian Bale and Constance Zimmer took home prizes for Best Supporting Actor and Best Supporting Actress in a Drama Series for “Mr. Robot” and “Unreal.”
So with the Critic’s Choice Awards and Golden Globes behind us, the next plethora of award shows involve the SAG, WGA, PGA and DGA awards ceremonies which will be HUGE indicators of where many could reign victorious for the Oscar!
