March Madness Fun

UNITED STATES—There is a reason I love the month of March, and it’s not St. Patrick’s Day, its March Madness. There is something about college basketball that gets my adrenaline rushing. “Win or go home,” that’s the slogan and it holds so true. The competitive nature for so many teams across the country vying for the top prize in the country just provides the unexpected when it comes to sports.

I’ve already contemplated the perfect scenario to fill out a bracket that could capture me a billion dollars. I mean who hasn’t heard about Quicken Loans’ challenge to all those college basketball fans to get a perfect bracket to get paid some major cash. Is it likely to happen, not really, but it’s not worth giving it a shot. I think what makes March Madness so much fun is you really don’t have to be an avid fan of sports to get involved in the melee; it just seems to happen naturally for so many people in my opinion.

Who doesn’t want to be around the midst of great sports fans, in sports cities having a great time? That’s what I love about college basketball, there just seems to be this amazing energy that you really don’t get from other sports in my opinion. Yeah, the Super Bowl is great, but also so predictable and overrated in my opinion; the excitement to watch isn’t there.

The NCAA tournament is all about the best of the best winning and it’s a dogfight from the very first game. You can be the best team in the nation, that doesn’t mean you’ll make it to the final four; I’ve seen countless teams bite the dust in the first or second round. If you have one bad night, that’s it.

Perhaps the greatest thrill about March Madness is all the attention smaller schools, who may not be on the radar of most Americans compared to the likes of Duke, UCLA, Michigan State, Michigan, Florida or Louisville, get the opportunity to shine in the Big Dance. All the schools I listed may be great, but those smaller schools could have some epic threats waiting to upset a few bracket lovers. Remember all it takes is one unexpected loss to completely throw one’s bracket off. Hey, it happens time and time again so don’t beat yourself up it does take place.

I am eagerly anticipating the edge of your seat action for the next three weeks that will culminate with the championship game on April 7. Let me just point this out, rarely is the championship game the biggest battle of them all, rarely do we see that transpire, its more a story of the final four that rattles the cages of everyone. Should I remind anyone of the hard fought battle of the Michigan Wolverines who no one expected to make it to the final four, yet alone the national championship game, it was so a thrill to watch each game leading to the final.

So have fun, live it up, not just for those on college campuses, but for sports fans and non sports fans. March Madness is here, which is a sign for many of us that the brutal, harsh winter many of us endured in 2014 is no ever. Remember drink responsibly! Fun can be had, without violence or too much craziness.
