HOLLYWOOD—Well, I can’t believe I’m saying this, but what the hell is going on with the box-office? The numbers this month alone has been slightly disappointing, I’m guessing it has something to do with a little movie, scratch that a big movie called “Star Wars: The Force Awakens” that opens on Friday, December 18.
Well for the fourth consecutive weekend, Jennifer Lawrence dominated the box-office as “The Hunger Games: Mockingjay – Part 2” earned $11.3 million. Quite impressive, because the final installment in the series is less than $6 million from crossing the $250 million mark domestically.
Proving that star power alone can’t draw in an audience was Ron Howard’s “In the Heart of the Sea” with a dismal $11 million. The flick starring Chris Hemsworth and chronicling the tale of that large whale many know as Moby Dick, did not grab the attention of moviegoers. Proving that animation is always certain to bring in revenue, “The Good Dinosaur” landed in third place with $10.5 million.
As I expected, word-of-mouth buzz for “Creed” is continuing to make the boxing flick starring Michael B. Jordan and Sylvester Stallone a contender this awards season with another $10.1 million to its total. After about 3 weeks in theaters the film has earned close to $90 million at the domestic box-office.
Rounding out the top five was the horror-comedy “Krampus” which added $8 million to its tally, dropping for a 50 percent in its second week. Well the wait is over, “Star Wars: The Force Awakens” opens this weekend, alongside the comedy “Sisters” starring Tina Fey and Amy Poehler.
I think we all know who will win the top prize. The bigger question is just how much money “The Force Awakens” draws in. Will it be enough to unseat “Jurassic World” from having the highest debut over a three-day weekend of all-time? I’m putting my money on a definitive YES!
