RIONEGRO, COLUMBIA—LaMia Flight 2933 which was carrying 77 passengers crashed into a hillside near Rionegro, Columbia on Monday, November 28.

“The plane is in total electric failure and without fuel,” a crew member informed CNN. Seventy-one plane members—including coaches, invited guests, reporters, and Brazil’s Chapecoense soccer team, were killed in the collision. Six survivors remained including two crew members, one journalist, and three team athletes.

Though the plane was approximately five miles from the airport the cause of the crash has not been confirmed by officials. Alfredo Bocanegra, Director of Columbian Civil Aviation Authority (CCVA) indicated an electrical problem could have caused the crash.

A memorial service was held on Thursday, December 1 at the Atanasio Girardot Stadium in Medellin; the location where the Chapecoense team was sat to play Columbia’s Atletico Nacional team in the first leg of the South American Cup finals, known as the Copa Sudamericana finals. The opposing team requested that the award go to Brazil in honor of the deceased players.

Audio recordings between pilot Miguel Quiroga, co-pilot Juan Sebastian Upegui, and air traffic control, where released by the Columbian media. The recordings are under investigation and in custody, confirmed CCVA spokesperson Maria Cristina Pabon.

“Miss, LaMia 933 is in total failure, total electrical failure, without fuel,” said Quiroga in the audio recordings to  Aljazeera.com.

Survivor Jackson Follman, goalkeeper for the Chapecoense soccer team who is recovering from a right leg amputation. Flight technician, Erwin Tumiri recalls hearing other passengers screaming and standing in their seats. “I put the bag between my legs and went into the fetal position as recommended,” said Tumiri.

The majority of victim bodies have been recovered by rescue teams. They will be returned to their respective countries of Bolivia and Brazil.

Brazil has declared three days of mourning. Nearly 200,000 people gathered at the Conda Stadium in Chapeco to honor the fallen team members.
