SAN FRANCISCO—A coalition of environmental groups have teamed up to sponsor a four-day pro-nuclear march that will start in San Francisco and end in Sacramento to bring attention to the closing of the Diablo Canyon nuclear power plant.

Nuclear plant owner PG&E announced Tuesday, June 21 their plan to close California’s last nuclear plant, Diablo Canyon, by 2025, and the alliance of pro-nuclear environmentalists stuck to their plans to march in support of keeping the plant open.

The March for Environmental Hope is a four-day trek that will transpire between June 24 and June 28. The March for Environmental Hope, is advertised as a family-friendly event being led by environmental activist groups, Mothers for Nuclear, Save Diablo Canyon, and Environmental Progress.

People in support of the march back the ideas of environmentalists and climate scientists whom have voiced that nuclear energy is essential in addressing global warming. The organization states on their website, “The loss of just a few nuclear plants has wiped out the growth of solar and wind in California, the U.S., Germany, and around the world. Now, America is at risk of losing 13 more nuclear plants in the next two years. If that happens, it will wipe out all of the electricity America generates from solar — not once, but four times over.”

The plant has been operating commercially since the mid 1980s and supplying power to about 3 million homes in northern and central California. A major argument for saving the nuclear plant is that natural gas will replace it, which is heavily used in California.

While nuclear power is emissions free, critics argue it can do great harm to the environment, considering Diablo Canyon sits atop an earthquake zone and next to an ocean; it could potentially render disaster if there was ever an earthquake.
