SAN FRANCISCO—KTVU San Francisco news reporter Alex Savidge and photographer Chip Vaughn were nearly struck by a car while reporting on the story about the derailed ACE commuter train in Alameda County on Tuesday, March 8.
Savidge was reporting live for Mornings on 2 in a 7-Eleven parking lot when a white Toyota Corolla drove onto the sidewalk after crashing into another vehicle on the road. Savidge and Vaughn were standing on Mission Boulevard at Niles Canyon Road in Fremont at the time of the incident, according to KTVU reports.
A video posted by KTVU captured the incident of Savidge turning his head and quickly jumping out of the way as the car nearly collided into him. According to the report, Savidge stated Vaughn had alerted him of the car just moments before it collided into the area where he was standing. In the video footage, the white vehicle is heard slamming into an object, which KTVU revealed to be a light stand.
Investigators arrived at the site of the crash and identified the woman driving the white Toyota Corolla may have accidentally stepped on the gas pedal instead of the breaks after colliding into the grey sedan. According to reports, the woman’s license has been taken away. No one was injured from the accident. The crash still remains under investigation.
Savidge released several posts to social media after the incident stating he was ok, and thanking the community for their concern. Savidge and Vaughn received an outpour of well-wishes including “flowers and beer” from their community of followers. Savidge has also posted pictures with his son expressing gratitude for being with his family.
