SAN FRANCISCO—San Francisco District Attorney George Gascón revealed on March 20 that District Attorney George Gascón announced that a jury found Ronald D. Mitchell, 43, guilty on March 14 of second degree robbery and assault of Michelle Maness, 26.

“Shaken and terrified, the victim in this case was robbed and assaulted while taking care of a baby,” said District Attorney George Gascón. “It’s unacceptable that someone would feel so bold and endanger our community. This conduct cannot be tolerated.”

According to court records, Mitchell approached Maness, on October 4, 2017 at approximately 12:00 p.m. in the area of Lincoln Way and 19th Avenue. The victim, who is a nanny, was walking an eight-month-old baby under her care in a stroller when the suspect approached her from behind and took her cellphone from her right rear pants pocket. After feeling movement, she turned around and yelled for help.

Mitchell grabbed Maness by the arm and threw her to the ground. Bystanders nearby approached Mitchell and informed him to leave the victim alone. Mitchell responded by throwing the victim’s cellphone to the ground and smashing it. She retrieved her phone and retreated inside a gas station nearby with the baby.

Mitchell utilized up a gas station fill cover and held it over his head, violently yelling at a gas station employee and others in the area before walking away in the direction of 18th Avenue.

Officers responding to multiple 911 calls arrested Mitchell in front of 1248 18th Avenue, where he was identified by the victim as her attacker.

“It is reprehensible that the defendant chose such a vulnerable set of victims,” said Assistant District Attorney Dane Reinstedt. “I hope that Ms. Maness and the infant’s family find some solace in this verdict.”
