SAN FRANCISCO—The San Francisco Municipal Transportation Agency will install new technology to all 22 city-owned parking facilities, the SFMTA announced on Wednesday, May 17.

The system includes new parking access and revenue control systems that will bring faster exiting, improved customer service and enhanced credit-card security, according to the SFMTA.

The three-year rolling installation program and system “PARCS,” is a combination of equipment and software that will run parking facility. The Polk-Bush Garage is the first to completely receive these upgrades.

According to the SFMTA, the ticket machines, gate arms, payment machined and cameras will interconnected and controlled by a central system.

The system will address lost tickets with a license plate recognition system and it will eventually allow for pre-payment at all city-owned garages, preventing long lines from forming during rush hour.

According to the SFMTA, it will also reduce fraud and allow for improved auditing and credit cards security and types of payment will be chip-enabled credit or debit cards.

Their strategy also includes smart pricing to encourage drives to use garage spaced first and use street parking for shorter stays. According to the SFMTA, parking rates in city-owned typically cost 50 to 60 percent less than private garages.

“Our goal is to provide a clean, safe and convenient parking to visitors, employees and business customers in downtown and other commercial and residential districts,” stated the San Francisco Municipal Transportation Authority on their website.
