SAN FRANCISCO—High winds from an overnight storm resulted in a capsized freight barge containing a crane near the Bay Bridge near Yerba Buena Island on Friday, April 1. The incident prompted the U.S. Coast Guard to contain the area, as oil and fuel leaked from the vessel.

The barge named ‘Vengeance,” was unmanned and measured at 112 feet, overturned at about 12:20 a.m. before sinking. The barge could spill up to 4,000 gallons of diesel fuel and 300 gallons of lube oil into the waters. It is usually moored at the island for corrosion prevention work on the underwater Transbay Tube rail tunnel connecting Oakland and San Francisco.

Officials believe winds, which reached more than 40 mph, caused the barge to sink. The barge had a crane that is currently under maintenance from an engineering contract by BART. There are no immediate reports of hazardous spills affecting wildlife.

The U.S. Coast Guard set aside $50,000 from its oil spill liability trust fund to use in case of a spill clean-up. A National Response Corporation Emergency Services crew placed 3,000 feet of boom around the barge, which will serve as a barrier to minimize the impact of the spill.

The owner of the barge is contracting local diving and salvage teams to remove the vessel, officials reported.
