HOLLYWOOD—Another weekend, a new champion at the box-office. Last week it was “Godzilla: King of Monsters” to rule, this weekend, it was the sequels “Dark Phoenix” and “The Secret Life of Pets 2” that battled for the top spot. Let’s just say the results were not that impressive.

The supposedly final installment of the “X-Men” franchise for the Marvel universe earned a paltry $33 million to debut in second place. On the flip side, “The Secret Life of Pets 2” landed in first place with $47.1 million. So what went wrong with the final chapter in the “X-Men” franchise for Marvel?

It was panned by critics, and quite frankly we saw the Jean Grey storyline before with “X-Men: The Last Stand.” I mean the 2016 flick “X-Men: Apocalypse” earned double of what “Dark Phoenix” brought in with moviegoers. Hmm, wondering if the switch to Disney was a major mistake. Last week’s champ, “Godzilla: King of the Monsters” dropped to third place with $15.5 million. After 10 days in theaters, the sequel has amounted close to $80 million at the domestic box-office.

Landing in fourth place was “Aladdin” with $24.5 million to bring its domestic tally to over $232 million. Rounding out the top five was the musical “Rocketman” with $14 million. The musical which highlights the life of Elton John has crossed the $50 million mark at the domestic box-office after just 10 days in theaters. This weekend sees the release of “Men in Black: International” and the remake/sequel to the 70s classic “Shaft.” Not sure how next week’s box-office will pan out, but I sense it will be an interesting one.
