SAN FRANCISCO—The serial bank robber that the FBI named as the “Dreaded Bandit” was taken into custody on Friday, August 12 moments before he entered another bank with a loaded revolver in his possession, according to the San Francisco Police Department website and the FBI’s website. The suspect robbed four banks between April and July this year.

With the work of the SFPD Night Investigation and the Special Investigations Division, Andre Mitchell Brown, 57, a San Francisco resident, was taken into custody before entering a bank on the 5400 block of Geary Boulevard. Brown was wearing items that the “Dreaded Bandit” became known for: a wig, fake beard, sunglasses and gloves. In past robberies, the suspect had also painted his face white to add to the disguise. Officers recovered a loaded revolver in the suspect’s possession.

SFPD Officer Carlos Manfredi directed San Francisco News to a press release for information on Brown’s prior criminal history. The investigation revealed that Brown had been recently released from prison after 27 years of incarceration and was on parole on an active federal probation for armed bank robbery. Brown was booked at the San Francisco County Jail on felony charges of attempted robbery, conspiracy, carrying a concealed firearm, felon in possession of a firearm, carrying a loaded firearm and intent to commit a felony.

Brown’s get-a-way driver, Javier Jerkins, 44, a San Francisco resident, was also taken into custody and booked at the San Francisco County Jail. Jerkins was charged with felony conspiracy and attempted robbery charges.

The SFPD is working with the FBI on solving other bank robbery cases that the suspect might be responsible for. The “Dreaded Bandit’s” crime spree began on April 22 at a bank located at 2001 Van Ness Avenue. The other banks that were robbed occurred on May 12 in San Mateo, California; June 23 at 2001 Union Street and July 11 at 2001 Union Street. The suspect would take over the bank at gunpoint and direct bank employees and customers to the vault area where he would obtain a large sum of money.

The investigation is still active and ongoing, and booking photos of Brown have been withheld due to possible outstanding witness identifications.
