HOLLYWOOD—This past weekend was slightly slower at the box-office than I expected. Why? Well last week’s champ saw a decent drop and the new releases in theaters didn’t come close to dethroning “Shazam!” from the top spot. “Shazam!” continued to dazzle audiences adding another $25 million during its second weekend in theaters. The superhero adventure is just under $5 million from crossing the $100 million mark at the domestic box-office. I would argue that is likely to happen by midweek at the latest.
Earning second place was the comedy “Little” starring Regina Hall, “Insecure” star Issa Rae and “black-ish” star Marsai Martin with $15.5 million. I suspect the film might earn a bit of buzz and see a boost in its numbers as we head into the long Easter holiday weekend. Debuting in third place was the reboot of the comic book hero “Hellboy” with a dismal $12 million. The flick has been panned by critics and its chances of recouping that budget cost of $50 million will be a struggle.
Dropping from second place to fourth place was the horror remake “Pet Sematary” which earned $10 million. The horror flick’s domestic tally has now reached over $40 million. Rounding out the top five was Disney’s “Dumbo” with $9.2 million. After nearly 3 weeks in theaters, the flick is still struggling to reach the $100 million mark at the domestic box-office. As we head into the Easter weekend, moviegoers will be tantalized with the horror flick “The Curse of La Llorona,” the inspirational flick “Breakthrough” and the documentary “Penguins.”
