WEST HOLLYWOOD—Now the competition really begins. In the past week, we’ve had the nominees for both the Golden Globes and the Critic’s Choice Awards unveiled. On Wednesday, December 12, the nominees for the 2019 Screen Actors Guild Awards were announced and now things are getting quite interesting. Why? The members of SAG are a bigger indicator of where things could stand when the Oscar nominees are revealed on January 22, 2019, and I must say I’m intrigued.

The big news is that “A Star is Born” leads the pack with a total of four nominations including Outstanding Performance by a Cast in a Motion Picture, Best Actor, Best Actress and Best Supporting Actor. Also picking up multiple nominations were “BlacKkKlansman” and “The Favourite.” What were the big surprises?

No love for “First Man,” no accolades for “If Beale Street Could Talk,” especially Regina King in the Supporting Actress race. I’m still baffled by the love for “BlacKkKlansman,” which I did not think was that entertaining of a film and had more flaws that highs in my personal opinion. I was ecstatic to see Emily Blunt get a nod for her riveting work in “A Quiet Place.” Fingers crossed that movie gets major love come Oscar season because it was fantastic.

We can also chat about the addition of Margot Robbie in the Supporting Actress race for her performance in “Mary Queen of Scots.” I’m not even sure if it’s worth talking about TV, because it seems like Network TV is becoming a thing of the past, only “This is Us” picked up nominations on the network side of things, while “Ozark” was the front runner with four nominations.

These SAG nominees are interesting because it forces me to suspect that “Black Panther” could indeed land a Best Picture Oscar nomination, but rather it’s is worthy of an actual win is a whole other story. A list of this year’s nominees can be viewed below:
