HOLLYWOOD—While the New Year holiday at the box-office tends to be slow, “Star Wars: The Force Awakens” is proving to be a flick of grand scale. “The Force Awakens” dominated the box-office for the third consecutive weekend taking in over $88.3 million. The flick which has already grossed over $700 million at the domestic box-office, is certain to overtake “Avatar” as the highest grossing flick of all-time.

The seventh installment in the franchise has already grossed $1.5 billion worldwide, and looks like it could become the first flick in American history to earn over $1 billion at the box-office. While “Star Wars” dominated, there were still plenty of other movies earning big bucks. “Daddy’s Home” remained in second place adding another $29 million to its tally. In less than 2 weeks the comedy starring Will Ferrell and Mark Wahlberg has earned over $90 million at the domestic box-office.

Landing in third place was Quentin Tarantino’s latest outing “The Hateful Eight” which earned over $16.12 million during the three-day weekend, since its release earlier in the week the dark comedy has grossed over $30 million. The Tina Fey and Amy Poehler comedy “Sisters” is proving to have legs at the box-office landing in fourth place with $12.6 million. With numbers like this, I expect the flick to at least earn over $100 at the domestic box-office.

Rounding out the top five was the sequel “Alvin and the Chipmunks: The Road Chip” earning $11.8 million. This weekend sees the release of the buzz-worthy flick “The Revenant” which might finally earn Leonardo DiCaprio his first Oscar. Hate to say it, but I think “Star Wars: The Force Awakens” will dominate the box-office again this coming weekend.
